I hope that you also see what a great contribution this information has been to the GPS community. You have every right to feel disheartened regarding this issue. I have gotten much better about contacting companies and getting their blessings before posting their data. I would like to publicly apologize to you for this slip up. ![]() For me that means looking at the state web page, state maps and other sources of information to verify what I have found driving around. I can't speak for Ken on all the locations, but part of the rules for creating poi files on this site are to do your own work. Over the past several months I have updated the rest area information and will be releasing a new title next month. The Rest Areas & Welcome Centers book currently advertised on my site is actually approaching three years old (I have only a handful of copies left). ![]() So I removed the information from the web site. I was also receiving email and phone calls from people asking about items they lost in a rest area. Web site traffic increased, book sales did not. I publish travel books for a living and put the rest area information on the site in hopes of increasing traffic and book sales. That would be my RoadNotes web site you are referring to. Google Earth Plus was the prime application to obtain the coordinations. This was necessary in order to give consistent proximity alerts. I have used the referenced website to cross check some info but since it didn't have coordinates (except for 3-4 states) it was not of great value to me as the key to the "Rest Areas Combined" POI file is that the coodinates in the file are for the entrances to the Rest Areas (or whatever) off the interstate and not the actual location of the rest area. You did your best, and I let you down. The data in these files was used to "find" the data that now exists in the combined file.ĩ9 % of the info in this file was obtained by using Individual State DOT websites, my licensed copy of Google Earth Plus, my licensed copy of Microsoft Streets & Trips, AAA website (I am a paid up member since 1985) maps, Interstate Exits Guide Website, Wikpedia info, various trucker websites for cross checks, personal observations in travelling through 35 states in the past 18 months (various routings) and users feedback from their observations for corrections, additions etc. Fortunately, the rest areas have good signage, but I do miss the voice saying 'Rest Area Ahead'. But the rest area information itself can't be copyrighted.įor your information the "Rest Areas Combined" file here on POI Factory was originally a compilation of individual state Rest Area POIs. ![]() It's a little disheartening to know that much of the rest area POI file available here was created using the information from my site (taken without permission, I might add).
